Pining for poetry
OK…it’s been one of those days. You know the kind of days when you get extremely nostalgic for no apparent reason? I woke up today with poetry dancing in my head. I thought first of my high school English teacher Mr. Coffey’s favorite poet…the great ee cummings. I admit that I, too, carry a bit of a touch for mr. cummings. One thing that I really love about poetry is that it always elicits a sort of cosmic response, leaving me yearning for more. Below are three poems that I find particularly heartfelt, honest and just plain beautiful. Read, respond and enjoy.
i carry your heart with me
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
-ee cummings
Prism
When you fall in love,
my sister said,
it’s like being struck
by lightening
She was speaking hopefully,
to draw the attention of
the lightening
I reminded her that she was
repeating exactly
our mother’s formula, which
she and I
had discussed in childhood,
because we both felt
that what we were looking
at in the adults
were the effects not of
lightening but of the electric
chair

Beautifully Broken
Strikingly beautiful
and
equally unaware.
Honest flaws
and
bluest of eyes
that decorate my dreams.
He stands proppped in a corner
where his last lover left him…
covered in dust,
hands in pockets.
An unwanted toy
with a heart full of hope,
beautifully broken.

On a side note…
I found this secret on Postsecret this week and thought it was extremely funny/appropriate for how I’ve been feeling lately
